Mail Art: A Mini Art Journal

Mini Art Journal

September’s Mail Art Swap was to make a Mini Art Journal.  It was so much fun, you start with a piece of good quality art paper any size, then paint it.  You then fold it into eight.

I used collage pieces on the page above and a scrap of paper from an old Danish book sent to me in a previous swap.

The little green hearts were also sent to me from a previous swap.

I used a pretty flower cut out from a magazine.

Art Journal Tag

When the journal is complete you have two slots at the top and two on the side. I made these tags to put in the slots.

Two of the tags I cut out from old tissue boxes, there are so many lovely designs.

Mail Art: Hand Made Paper Beads

Paper Beads

Augusts Art Swap was to make paper beads. We could choose how many swaps, each swap being 20 beads. I have never made beads before and it was relativity easy.

I randomly hand painted some A4 sheets of paper, painting the opposite way to how the beads are rolled (Photos No. 1 – 3).  I also made some from magazine pages (Photo No. 4). I played around making different shapes and decorated some with colourful threads and paua shells.

These beads can used in art journaling or to decorate gift tags.

If you want to learn how to make these beads the link is here.

Mail Art: Recycled Tags for Art Journaling

July’s Art Swap was to make three tags for an art journal, the theme being ‘Rainbow’. I recycled some tags that are usually pinned to new clothes. I painted and collaged both sides and added a few beads and stamps.

One morning I opened my back door and there was a parcel sitting on the doorstep. My swap partner Tiana from Texas completely spoilt me and sent me lots of goodies beside tags – a texas badge, a card, packet of Lupin seeds and 2 packets of peanut brittle. I felt like it was my birthday and she was so generous.

I enjoy receiving Mail Art, no-one seems to write letters these days.  It makes a pleasant change to receive some art work in my letterbox instead of junk mail and bills.

Mail Art: Painted Bookmarks Based on My Favourite Books

Chinese Bookmark‘The Painted Veil’ Bookmark

I recently joined a monthly Art Swap Group, with a different theme for each month. The group selects a partner and post your artwork to that person vice versa. April’s theme was to make two bookmark’s based on our favorite books.

My first book mark  based on book ‘The Painted Veil’ by W. Somerset Maugham.  Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920’s, The Painted Veil is the story of the beautiful but love-starved Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to go with him to the heart of a cholera epidemic in a remote village. It’s a story of how one-sided relationships can lead to heartbreak for everyone involved.

‘Driving Over Lemons’ Bookmark

This is a story of an English couple Chris & Ana Stewart who buy a remote working farm in Las Alpujarras, Granada, Spain. El Valero lush with olive, lemon, and almond groves, the farm lacks a few essentials—running water, electricity, an access road.

Chris a skilled sheep Shearer and a former drummer of the band ‘Genesis’, Stewart appears on the band’s first two singles.

I have read the two sequels ‘Parrot in a Pepper Tree’ and ‘The Almond Blossom Appreciation Society’.

Happy Valentine’s Day

SAMOA valentine day

In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge Life Imitates Art

This photograph taken at Lano Beach, Savaii, Samoa.  We were staying at Lauiula Beach Fales which was steps away from the ocean. The dark patch’s in the ocean are coral and where the waves break is the outer reef.

I painted a Samoan lady to remind me of our holiday in Samoa.
